Craniosacral Therapy

Craionsacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, manual form of bodywork and is an effective method that can be used alone or in combination with other techniques to produce profound changes. The main regions treated with CST are the head (cranium), torso, and base of the spine (sacrum).

CST works with the Craniosacral rhythm which is produced by the ebb and flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the membrane which encases the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord. The CSF protects the brain spinal cord from injury that may be caused by an impact and it also nourishes the brain and spinal cord and drains away impurities.

The flow of the CSF, together with the motion of the membrane of the central nervous system and the body parts of the Craionsacral system, assist a great number of vital functions in the body. The rhythm created by these functions has a frequency of about 6-12 cycles per minute and can be sense by a trained practitioner through gentle palpation of the body. This rhythm is also referred to as primary respiration.

CST can help correct, support and intensify the self-regulation of the body, its self-healing forces and immune resistance. CST may reduce or correct restrictions in the Craniosacral system. The subtle support given to the natural motion of the Craniosacral bones and all the body fluids can give more room and freedom of motion for the brain as a whole leading to better function.

CST assists several different body systems and relaxes the body, reducing stress hormones, which allows the body to enter a healing place and begin to return to its natural state of balance, or homeostasis.

CST is performed with the client fully clothed and the practitioner begins by “listening” to the Craniosacral rhythm. This can take several minutes. From there the practitioner will gently manipulate various bony structures and if appropriate may also address restrictions in the viscera and limbs. The only “job” the client has during a CST session is to relax their mind, free their spirit and reconnect with their bodies.

Mind, body and spirit are united and cannot be separated. Loving, healing, non-judgmental touch can beginning to address the various levels within us that make us human:

  • physical level
  • emotional level
  • intellectual level
  • spiritual level

Evidence of the positive effects of touch therapy has been proven in over 90 scientific studies.
