Many of my clients often remark on how much they enjoy the aroma of my office. That is thanks mainly in part to Thieves oil.
Thieves oil, also called Four Thieves, is a blend of 5 essential oils; Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Lemon and Rosemary.
Legend has it that in 15th Century Europe, during the time of the Black Plague, four spice merchants were forced to become grave-robbers due to the collapse of the economy. To protect themselves from contracting the plague they created what is now called (Four) Thieves Oil and covered their hands and arms in it and breathed it in through special hoods. Those spice merchants turned thieves never got sick, but they did get caught. It’s said that in exchange for lighter sentences they shared the recipe for their miracle oil.
This story may or may not have happened, however in 1997 Weber State University in Utah conducted a study and found Thieves oil killed 99% of airborne bacteria when diffused into a room.
Since Thieves is known to be highly antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-infectious it can be a great addition to your home and work place wellness routine.
I like to diffuse Thieves in my home, and obviously in my office. It has a warm, clean and inviting aroma. I also use it as a surface cleaner simply by adding 1 (one) drop of oil for every 1 (one) ounce of distilled water. You can use a spray bottle and keep it handy for all your cleaning needs.
You can also add it to your dishwasher and washing machine, which is great way to help stop the spread of germs especially when one member of the household comes down with a cold or the flu. Just add 4-5 drops of oil to your regular detergent and be sure to use the hottest water setting.
Speaking of having a cold – diffusing Thieves in your home or office is great way to help eliminate airborne germs. At first signs of a cold start running a diffuser 24 hours a day until symptoms subside.
You can make you own Thieves Oil or you can buy it pre-blended (which is what I do). Just make sure your buying from a reputable manufacture and that the oil blend is therapeutic grade. My personal favorite is Edens Garden Four Thieves.
For those that feel adventurous, here’s the recipe:
In a dark glass bottle add the following essential oils
40 drops of Clove Essential Oil
20 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil
15 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
10 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
35 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
store in a cool, dark place with the cap on tight – keep away from children and pets
(FYI – a 15 ml bottle of essential oil contains approximately 285 drops and a 5 ml bottle contains approximately 85 drops so buy accordingly)
